Armstrong’s infamous – and sometimes criticized – call and response game was stronger than ever at Pinkpop, but the mostly Dutch audience gladly kept on singing their “Hey yo” and “Oh oh”. As expected, there was also some ranting against Trump and the current state of America. The crowd cheered for every stab at Trump, especially when Armstrong announced that he would gladly move to the Netherlands since they apparently know “how to do shit the right way”.
The band kept on playing some of their greatest hits like “Longview” (with another fan on stage), “Youngblood”, “Hitchin’ a Ride”, “When I Come Around” and the underdog hymn “Minority” which were followed by the American Idiot songs “Are We The Waiting” and the fast “St. Jimmy” which always gets the crowd moshing like crazy. The Dookie tracks “She” and of course “Basket Case” are absolute fan favorites and the whole audience sang along.
During the Operation Ivy cover “Knowledge”, Green Day pulled another fan on stage: the 11-year old Juul played guitar on the track and then burst out in tears from happiness. A heart-melting moment that was only topped when Armstrong told him that he can keep the guitar and they guy screamed and jumped cause he couldn’t believe his luck.
