Song Review: Paramore – Hard Times

Paramore are back with a bang, but if you expected that “bang” to have loud guitars, you might be disappointed. The threesome released their first single “Hard Times” of their upcoming album “After Laughter” after a four-years-hiatus. But not only their sound has changed, the band has also a slightly changed line up: bassist Jeremy Davis had left the band a while ago, leaving Hayley Williams and Taylor York wondering about the future of Paramore. Gladly the duo decided to keep on going and write another record. Non other than founding member Zac Farro (drums) joined them again and completed the new line up.

Hard Times is almost schizophrenic: the music has a super happy summer vibe, reminiscent of a laid back 80s Pop song, but the lyrics tell another story.
“Walking around / With my little raincloud / Hanging over my head / And it ain’t coming down”, Hayley sings in the second verse. “Hard Times” is about depression, frustration and the overwhelming feeling that it won’t ever get better. The song shows that there’s more to Paramore than funny hair colors and a good tune. And regarding the crass change of genre: we all know that genre is dead, so lets just let artists do the type of music they love instead of whining about the old times!
