Fall Out Boy Update Billy Joel Classic ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’

Can’t say we had this one on our Fall Out Boy bingo card. The band have shared their updated take on Billy Joel’s 1989 classic “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”

The updated version references newsworthy items from 1989 – 2023, such as the death of Michael Jackson, Donald Trump’s impeachment, Balloon Boy, the L.A. Riots, 9/11, the death of Prince and Kurt Cobain, and George Floyd. They even name-drop pop culture cornerstones like Pokemon, Avatar, Stranger Things, and Spongebob.

The band released a statement explaining the cover saying “I thought about this song a lot when I was younger. All these important people and events – some that disappeared into the sands of time – others that changed the world forever. So much has happened in the span of the last 34 years – we felt like a little system update might be fun. Hope you like our take on it.”

Listen to it below.

Fall Out Boy is currently in the middle of their summer North American tour with Bring Me the Horizon, Alkaline Trio, and New Found Glory. Check out all their dates here.
