GENRE IS DEAD! Top List: The Top 10 Reasons Why We Love Hayley Williams
3. Hayley’s song writing
Hayley definitely knows how to deliver a punchline! Her songwriting isn’t a solo deal though with Josh Farro co-writing most Paramore songs before he left the band, and Taylor York taking his place as Hayley’s partner in (written) crime afterwards. Paramore’s lyrics show a variety of emotions from sass to heartbreak to frustration to anger. Here are a few examples:
The cinematic “Brick By Boring Brick”:
So one day he found her crying
Coiled up on the dirty ground
Her prince finally came to save her
And the rest you can figure out
But it was a trick
And the clock struck twelve
Well make sure to build your house brick by boring brick
Or the wolf’s gonna blow it down
The conflicted ballad “Last Hope”:
And the salt in my wounds isn’t burning anymore than it used to
It’s not that I don’t feel the pain, it’s just I’m not afraid of hurting anymore
And the blood in these veins isn’t pumping any less than it ever has
And that’s the hope I have, the only thing I know that’s keeping me alive
The “Fuck You”-Interlude “I’m Not Angry Anymore”:
I’m not bitter anymore,
I’m syrupy sweet.
I rot your teeth down to their core,
If I’m really happy.
And my personal favorite, the well-placed threat of mutilation in “Playing God”:
You don’t have to believe me
But the way I, way I see it
Next time you point a finger
I might have to bend it back
Or break it, break it off
Next time you point a finger
I’ll point you to the mirror
