Madonna Celebrates Turning 60 With Launch Of Malawi Fundrasier
How does the queen of pop celebrate turning 60? By launching a new fundraiser. Madonna revealed plans to launch an online fundraiser to help support her Raising Malawi foundation to celebrate her birthday (August 16).
“I have an unwavering commitment to providing vulnerable children with a loving home. For my birthday, I can think of no better gift than connecting my global family with this beautiful country and the children who need our help most,” Madonna, who has adopted four children from the African nation, said in a statement.
“Every dollar raised will go directly to meals, schools, uniforms and health care. I want to come together with my friends, fans and supporters to change the lives of Malawian children and let them know they are nurtured, protected and loved.”
Madonna teamed up with Facebook for the fundraiser, which launched today (July 30) and runs through August 31st. The event managed to raise $3,200 in donations towards its goal of $60,000 in an hour after launch.
“100% of every contribution goes directly to Raising Malawi’s work at Home of Hope orphanage, located in a rural, high-need area of Malawi,” Facebook added. “Also, the international payment firm Ripple has announced it will be matching all donations to Madonna’s fundraiser.”

Madonna started the Raising Malawi foundation with Michael Berg in 2006. It is dedicated to helping Malawi orphans who face extreme poverty and hardship, through health and education programming. Some of the work the foundation has done includes opening the Mercy James Institute of Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care and building 14 secondary schools in Kasungu Province in Malawi.
