While You Were Away: Cradle of Filth’s Homage To Halloween, The Nightmares’ LP, Remembering Paul Di’Anno, And More
All Hallow’s Eve is nearly upon us. Before you welcome all things that go bump in the night, catch up with music news you missed with this week’s edition of While You Were Away. This week: new music from Cradle of Filth and The Nightmares, remembering Iron Maiden’s Paul Di’Anno, tours on sale, and more.
The Nightmares announce new album ‘Fire In Heaven’
The Nightmares have announced their second album, Fire In Heaven, due out on February 1th via Venn Records. As a preview of the record, the band have shared new single “Dead Roses.”
Vocalist/guitarist Adam Parslow says the song “explores how a single thought or observation can trigger a deep-set emotional reaction inside one’s self.”
He continues: “How something as trivial as a discarded rose on the ground can transport you back to a time in your life when something traumatic happened to you,” Adam explains. “Life can sometimes lead us into a false sense of emotional security – only to strike us down like a dagger in the night when we least expect it… Dead Roses is a song that explores those emotions, anxieties and fears.”
Talking about the record, the band reveals the title is taken from a quote by Killing Joke’s Jaz Coleman who “was speaking glowingly of the sound produced by the late great guitarist Kevin ‘Geordie’ Walker. “The quote really resonated with us as a band and we felt it perfectly captured the mood of the new songs. This record explores the curiosity between the struggles of human existence on Earth, and the weight of what else might be out there in the wider universe…”

The Struts channel The Mighty Boosh in new video ‘Can’t Stop Talking’
The Struts have shared their music video for their latest single “Can’t Stop Talking.”
The black and white clip is an homage to mod-inspired British rock as frontman Luke Spiller details the trouble his lack of filter has gotten him into. Spiller talks about how The Mighty Boosh inspired the song saying:
“By the time the choruses were written for the song, it reminded me of The Mighty Boosh episode ‘Jungle’”, Spiller explains. “There’s a scene where these ‘Mod Wolves’ show up and dance to this song that really had the same vibe to it. I was a big Boosh fan growing up – still am – and that was enough for me to know it was great.”

Paul Di’Anno, former Iron Maiden singer, dies
Paul Di’Anno, Iron Maiden singer on their first two records, has died at 66.
Di’Anno’s record label, Conquest Music, reported the news saying “On behalf of his family, Conquest Music are sad to confirm the death of Paul Andrews, professionally known as Paul Di’Anno. Paul passed away at his home in Salisbury at the age of 66.”
The statement goes on to talk about the health issues Di’Anno faced in recent years, which restricted him to a wheelchair. The statement concludes with “Conquest Music are proud to have had Paul Di’Anno in our artist family and ask his legion of fans to raise a glass in his memory.”
Iron Maiden released their own statement saying:
“We are all deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Paul Di’Anno earlier today,” read a statement from Maiden on the band’s social media channels. “Paul’s contribution to Iron Maiden was immense and helped set us on the path we have been travelling as a band for almost five decades. His pioneering presence as a frontman and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be very fondly remembered not just by us, but by fans around the world.”
Our thoughts go out to Di’Anno’s family and friends during this difficult time.
Cradle of Filth release new song ‘Malignant Perfection’
In the spirit of the Halloween season, Cradle of Filth have released their new single “Malignant Perfection.”
Frontman Dani Filth describes the song as “our horrific homage to All Hallows’ Eve, as embodied by the female deification of evil. It is a perfect musical accompaniment to the spirit of the witching season; invoking dark, Autumnal splendour and celebrating the time when the thin line between life and death is at its most tenuous and the denizens of the otherworld seek to break the veil into ours.”
The frontman adds that, “The video, directed by the imitable Vicente Cordero and featuring the creative masterstrokes of one Missy Munster, is a playground of seductive darkness rife with malicious monsters and cryptid creations, all vying voraciously for the viewer’s eternal soul.”
