WYWA: Trivium’s New EP, Sumo Cyco Returns, New Rise Against, And More
So, can we all agree that we’ve had enough of summer? If it’s not the scorching temperatures, it’s summer thunderstorms keeping you up all night. At least there was a lot of great new music to keep me going this week. Trivium’s new EP and the return of Sumo Cyco, plus new music from The Hunna, and more are covered in this week’s edition of While You Were Away.
The Hunna announce new EP ‘blue transitions’

The Hunna will return this fall with their first-ever EP, blue transitions. Out on November 14th via FLG, frontman Ryan Potter describes the release as “set of powerful, melancholic songs taking a deeper look into the transformations and changes that occur naturally in life between two individuals. The transitional moments and mechanisms that can play out all underlined by different complexions of blue signifying sadness yet also grace in the face of such difficult moments.”
The band have also shared lead single “bloom,” which Potter reveals “follows on from the first single hide & seek. It’s a story about the raw gritty parts to love, life and relationships. Are we able to see past any triggers or past trauma we faced for what they are? And do we have the courage to confront them?”

Rise Against share new single ‘Richochet’ from new album

Chicago punks Rise Against recently released their 10th album, Ricochet, and to celebrate, the band have shared the title track.
Speaking about the song, frontman Tim McIlrath says, “We rely on each other, whether we like it or not. Everything that you do will affect somebody. We’re connected to other countries and other economies; we’re connected to undocumented immigrants. We’re connected to every decision that our leaders make. We are not as isolated as we think. What we do, good or bad, creates one big ricochet effect.”
Regarding the video directed by Kai Dickson, he says, “When I was writing Ricochet, I couldn’t shake this image: people dancing while bombs and bullets careened overhead. That contrast – the obliviousness of joy against the backdrop of destruction – felt like the world we’re living in. The video brings that to life. It’s about more than action and reaction. It’s about how even our silence, even our detachment, carries weight. Every choice, every shrug, every shot fired – they all ricochet.”

Sumo Cyco unleash new single ‘Asteroid’

Sumo Cyco gives us another taste of their upcoming album, Neon Void, with their latest single “Asteroid.”
The song arrives with a trippy, technicolor fever dream video directed by frontwoman Skye Sweetnam. “It’s about impact and anger. The world is so interconnected, and we all have heard of the butterfly effect,” she says about the song. “I feel there’s a growing tension when the actions one person takes affect everyone in profound ways. Thoughts can spread like viruses. Technology can change the world.
“We glorify inflicting maximum change, but in the wrong hands, it can be exploitative of power. Whether that’s the ‘Move Fast and Break Things’ mentality or charging into AI tech before anyone can reconcile with the consequences. It makes me mad that we can be so reckless in pursuit of glory and ego. I feel like a flaming ball of rock & metal that wants to hurl myself into the abyss! The world has been through worse disasters, and it will survive. The question is, will we?”

Trivium unveil new single ‘Bury Me With Screams’

Metal titans Trivium have released their new single “Bury Me With Screams,” their first offering from the upcoming Struck Dead EP, out October 31st. The three-song EP is the first release to come out of the band’s new studio, located at their aircraft hangar in Florida.
“In 2023, we decided it was finally time to take the next step with The Hangar space we purchased — it was time to turn it into a full studio,” says bassist Paolo Gregoletto. “We brought in designer Roger D’Arcy, thanks to an introduction from Mark Lewis, and set out on a year-long build. While construction was underway, we were deep in rehearsals for The Poisoned Ascendancy Tour, celebrating Ascendancy’s 20th anniversary. What started as an idea to release one single during the tour quickly grew into two, then three, as we kept writing while we were waiting for the build-out to be completed.
“During that time, the energy of revisiting Ascendancy started bleeding into these new songs. Matt [Heafy, frontman] poured a lot of his personal struggles from the past year into the music, and we used the writing process as a cathartic release. Those sessions evolved into a three-song EP that we’re incredibly proud of, and we can’t wait to debut Bury Me With My Screams live at Bloodstock Open Air Festival.”
