Mark O’Connell Leaves Taking Back Sunday
After nearly 25 years behind the drumkit, Mark O’Connell has announced his departure from Taking Back Sunday.
O’Connell posted a statement on Instagram yesterday (Jan. 7) thanking fans for their support and noting that the decision wasn’t an easy one and “wasn’t entirely on my own.”
He mentions how he “didn’t always feel support from those I thought of as brothers” in terms of his focusing on his personal growth and sobriety. He also cites creative differences that made it hard for him to move forward with the band.
Though his time with Taking Back Sunday has ended, it doesn’t mean his music career is over. He looks ahead to his future in music saying “I’m excited to share that I’ll be releasing new music soon – both as a solo artist and with some old friends. I’ve poured my heart into this project, and I can’t wait to share it with you.”
He concludes his statement with “I’m grateful for the incredible memories with each of my bandmates – and all of you, as well as all the opportunities along the way. I’m choosing to focus on the good as I move into this next chapter.”

Taking Back Sunday have yet to comment on O’Connell’s departure or if a new drummer will join the lineup full-time.
