Either way, we’re ending the month with new music from Wednesday 13 and St. Vincent, plus tours you don’t want to miss, and Sum 41’s take on Rage Against the Machine. All this and more in this week’s edition of While You Were Away.

The All-American Rejects have confirmed they will return with a new album this year. The band broke the news on social media, where they also announced their new single “Sandbox” will be released on April 24th.

In a recent interview with PAPER, frontman Tyson Ritter revealed how the band reconnected to make their first album since 2012’s Kids In The Street.

“That’s exciting,” he said. “I think I said in an interview, people don’t really want a new All-American Rejects record. People want their time capsule and want to jump into it and feel like they smell CK One and it makes them feel young. But the question I pose is, ‘What if we can say something now? What if we can actually resonate?’”

“People say they want new music from certain bands, but they don’t necessarily want stuff that sounds exactly like the stuff we already gave them and nostalgic feels… they already have that,” agreed guitarist Nick Wheeler. “If we’re going to do something, we’re going to do something different that hopefully resonates with them, as well as a new audience.”

“Recording these Spotify Singles has been an incredible way to celebrate with our fans around the world,” stated the band. “We’re so grateful for their support and excited to share this special session with everyone. Huge thanks to Spotify for making this experience possible.”

Though the studio version of the cover has just been released, Sum 41 have performed the song several times in concert, including at France’s Hellfest Open Air 2023.

Wednesday 13 has shared his new single “In Misery” taken from his forthcoming album, Mid Death Crisis, out April 25th via Napalm Records.

The song is the opposite of a love song. The track finds the Duke of Spook confessing that he hates being in an ill-fated relationship.

“There are too many love songs out there about people confessing their love to one another. I wanted to do the exact opposite, and confess the misery of being in a bad relationship. Hopelessly, madly in misery with someone. I see it every day, people miserable together. I see it almost as much as I see people happily together. Some people enjoy misery, and this song is about enjoying that misery as much as someone in love.”
