The Cure’s Robert Smith Fights Ticketmaster, Promises Partial Refunds

The Cure’s Robert Smith went above and beyond to make sure fans could afford tickets to the band’s highly anticipated North American tour. While ticket prices were kept low, Ticketmaster still found a way to screw fans over with fees that were more expensive than the ticket they purchased. When Smith heard about this, he said he was “sickened” by the fees.

“I am as sickened as you all are by today’s Ticketmaster ‘fees’ debacle,” Smith wrote on Twitter. “To be very clear: The artist has no way to limit them. I have been asking how they are justified. If I get anything coherent by way of an answer I will let you all know.”

In a shocking turn of events, Smith actually got Ticketmaster to dole out partial refunds to make up for the “unduly high” fees.

“After further conversation, Ticketmaster have agreed with us that many of the fees being charged are unduly high, and as a gesture of goodwill have offered a $10 per ticket refund to all ‘Verified Fan’ accounts for lowest ticket price (‘LTP’) transactions,” he wrote. He also noted that a $5 refund would go to “Verified Fan” accounts for other ticket transactions, and said tickets on sale tomorrow will have lower fees.

Robert Smith is truly sticking up for the fans and proves that artists do have some say in the practice, especially when it comes to dynamic pricing. Earlier this week, Smith called dynamic pricing and platinum a “greedy scam” and went on to decree “all artists have the choice not to participate…if no artists participated, it would cease to exist.”
